Abstract: The article makes a historical incursion during the Middle Ages, following the development of the institution of self-defense during this period. Several aspects are highlighted, such as: regulatory differences from one state to another – with laws that allow, or prohibit, self-defense, the importance of Roman law and the development of original rules based on barbaric customs, the influence of Christian religious norms and canon law.
