Abstract: As early as the 1970s, alternative measures to imprisonment began to be considered at EU level. This article analyzes the types of sentences and their enforcement in the United Kingdom – England and Wales, with emphasis on the particularities of the enforcement of the prison sentence and on alternatives to the prison sentence, as provided for in the relevant legislation of these states.
